Dr. J. B. Agrawal
Dr. Jugalkishore B. Agrawal, or Dr. J.B. as he is popularly known, has so many “firsts” to his credit, that it is difficult to draw a thumbnail-sketch of his brooding, caring personality. A hyperactive man of few words, he would rather that his prowess with his endoscopic/surgical implements does the talking.
As he strides the country’s laparoscopic scene like a colossus today, he is mindful of his humble origins. Dr. J.B.’s journey of excellence started way back in 1971, when he obtained his Masters’ in General Surgery from the University of Bombay (standing second in the overall merit list). Steadily rising to dizzying heights in his chosen area of work, he has successfully attended to more general patients and VIP clients than would fill a few football stadia.
And he is still hungry for more.
Hidden in the long list of “firsts” appended to his name are a plethora of achievements: He was the first surgeon in India to use G.I. staplers (in 1981) and also the first to perform the Sugiura procedure with staplers. Although in 1991 he was the second surgeon in India to perform a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, he then powered ahead to become the first surgeon to perform these pioneering laparoscopic procedures:- rectopexy (October, 1996); splenectomy (March, 1995); total extraperitoneal repair of hernia (1996); nephrectomy; gastropexy (in 1999) and Morgagni Hernia (in 2006).
At present, Dr. J.B. Agrawal is Hon. Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Jaslok Hospital &
Research Centre, and the Asian Heart Institute & Research Centre, both located in Mumbai. He is Chief
Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Bhakti Vedanta Hospital and the M.G. Global BSES Hospital,
also in Mumbai. He is also Visiting Laparoscopic Surgeon at K.E.M. Hospital,
Parel, and Faculty Member at the Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education, Mahim.
Earlier, he was Hon. Gastrointestinal and Laparoscopic Surgeon at Lilavati Hospital & Research Centre, and Chief Hon. Surgeon at M.W. Desai Municipal Hospital, Malad (since 1976).
He has conducted scores of workshops on G.I. stapling all over the country, and nearly 100 on laparoscopic surgery. With over 50 scientific papers in various national and international journals to his credit, Dr. J.B. has participated as Guest Speaker/Panelist/Delegate in nearly 200 national and international medical meetings.
Founder Secretary of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo-Surgeons (I.A.G.E.S.) in 1993, he has put in more hard work and labour than anyone else in the propagation of laparoscopic surgery in India.
